Strengthening Community Protection Against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment

Empowering local leaders to prevent abuse, protect vulnerable populations, and build safer communities.

Every child, adolescent, and adult deserves to live with safety, dignity, and freedom from exploitation, harassment, and abuse. Protecting these fundamental rights requires more than awareness—it requires informed community leadership, accessible support systems, and a shared commitment to prevention.

Through our community protection and safeguarding efforts, Compassion Kind’s Malawi team conducted capacity-building training in GVH Tembwe, under Traditional Authority Kalonga, focused on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (PSEAH).

The training brought together Community Police Forum members, Village Development Committee representatives, and Mother Group leaders to strengthen local understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and community-level prevention.

Particular attention was given to the protection of children, adolescent girls, and young women, who may face heightened risks of exploitation and abuse.

Participants explored relevant gender laws and policies, prevention principles, and approaches to responding to safeguarding concerns. PSEAH guidelines were also distributed to support their work in community-level case management.

By strengthening the knowledge and capacity of existing community structures, this initiative seeks to encourage earlier identification of risks, appropriate responses to safeguarding concerns, and stronger community accountability.

Our broader vision is to support communities where people understand their rights, local leaders are equipped to respond responsibly, and individuals affected by abuse can seek protection and assistance without fear of discrimination or stigma.

Safety, dignity, and freedom from exploitation are fundamental human rights and essential foundations for healthy, thriving communities.
